Cluster Pastoral Council Corner

The Portland Peninsula & Island Parishes Pastoral Council, consisting of representatives of each of the five parishes, meets monthly to discuss the administrative, pastoral & faith formation issues that affect our Portland Peninsula Catholic community.  Our meetings, which are open to all Church members, have not only allowed us to share & discuss the concerns facing our parishioners but have also enabled us to broaden our perspective and understanding of the growing needs of our diverse population.

We all must know by now that the church which each of us grew up in has dramatically changed and has caused many to wonder where our church has gone.  The answer simply is that our church is planning for the future! The pastoral resources are limited and we, as the faithful, have assumed greater responsibility for operations of our parish.

Change is never easy, but with our faith in God and one another, we will grow to be a stronger community, albeit different from what exists today.  Your understanding, cooperation and input is essential to assure that Portland Peninsula and Island Catholics are well served. When asked, please volunteer.

Please contact one of us listed on this page with questions or advice.

Portland Peninsula & Island Parishes Pastoral Council

About the Portland Peninsula and Island Parishes
Cluster 21 is a diverse Catholic community. It is made up of five parishes, four in the city of Portland, Maine within a two-mile radius and one on Peaks Island. Each parish boasts of a robust community, a unique mission, and a proud tradition.
  • The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Parish on Congress Street is the Mother Church of the diocese and seat of the Bishop of Portland.

  • Sacred Heart/ St. Dominic Parish on Mellen Street is a blended community developed since the closure of St. Dominic Church in 1992, serving a vibrant multi-cultural community.

  • St. Louis Parish on Danforth Street is a Polish National Church, the only Polish church in the state of Maine. It was founded in 1915, and built by Polish immigrants in 1924.

  • St. Peter Parish on Federal Street is an Italian National Church.

  • St. Christopher Parish on Peaks Island is a year-round community and its missions, Star of the Sea Church on Long Island and Chebeague Island are active only in the summer.

Note: The term "national church" was used by the Church to indicate American parishes that served a particular immigrant community--a lot of these were founded between 1930-1950.  That way, someone who was of that nationality could actually register at that national church rather than one's neighborhood parish in the days where parish territory was strictly adhered to.

One overriding principle guides the leadership of the Cluster, that the unique cultural identity and mission of each present parish should be preserved, while celebrating the diversity that makes our cluster so rich.

The five parishes comprising Cluster 21 includes persons of African, French, Hispanic, Irish, Italian, Polish, Vietnamese, and many other heritages. In addition our parishioners are of diverse socio-economic levels, health, age, and states of life. While most reside in Portland, many live in communities outside of Portland, drawn to our parishes because they offer unique and rich spiritual and communal experiences.

Welcome to Cluster 21, the Peninsula and Island Parishes of Portland, Maine.
